When anxiety spikes, a forest path or sandy shore can drop our pulse in minutes. Studies of eco-therapy show time outdoors lowers stress hormones and boosts dopamine—vital gains when early sobriety feels like emotional whiplash. 

Carolyn Bennett, Coach at The Zero Proof Life, learned this first-hand. Morning wine had turned into nightly numbness; swapping stemware for sunrise walks rewired her cravings and inspired the coaching work she does today.

 

1. Grounding for Highly Sensitive People

Empaths and HSPs process external stimuli at full volume. Alcohol can seem like an “off” switch—until it isn’t. Carolyn’s nature hacks:

  • Five-sense reset: notice one sound, one scent, one texture, one color, one movement.
  • Barefoot grounding: 60 seconds of soles-to-sand discharges nervous energy.
  • Breath cadence 4-4-6: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 6—your vagus nerve’s favorite rhythm.
