Episode 20 of The Zero Proof Life Podcast
We all carry beliefs that feel like truth but are really just old stories. Sometimes they were handed to us in childhood or absorbed from culture. Other times they were shaped by moments where we didn’t feel strong enough to choose differently. And yet, beneath every limiting belief is a quiet knowing — a version of ourselves who’s been trying to get our attention, whispering that more is possible.
This is the work of growth: noticing the voice that says “you can’t,” and choosing to listen instead to the one that says “try.”
Where Limiting Beliefs Begin
Most limiting beliefs were formed long before adulthood. They grow out of past experiences, survival instincts, and the internalized messaging we didn’t know we were absorbing.
They tend to sound like:
“Don’t even go there.”
“You always mess this up.”
“You’re not a failure, but…”
These thoughts feel protective, but they keep us small. When you learn to pause and ask, “Is this actually true?” you open a door that may have been locked for years.
Try This Line:
“What if this belief isn’t truth, what if it’s just familiar?”
Understanding Your Inner Critic
The inner critic is rarely the enemy. It’s a signal. A flag that says, “A limiting belief is here.”
Instead of silencing it, get curious.
-
What is this voice trying to protect?
-
Who taught me this belief?
-
When did I first decide this was true?
Curiosity loosens the grip shame tries to maintain.
Reminder:
Your inner critic isn’t telling the whole story — it’s telling an old story.
Meeting Your Inner Mentor
While the inner critic evaluates your past, your inner mentor speaks from your future. It is the part of you who has already done the thing you’re scared of. She sees your potential, your capacity, and your resilience with clarity.
When you imagine yourself five years from now — grounded, strong, alcohol-free, centered — that voice is your guide.
Try This Simple Tool:
Close your eyes and ask: “What would the future version of me say about this moment?”
You’ll often hear a softer truth: “The possibility is there.”
Three Take-Home Tools
The One-Liner:
“Limiting beliefs lose their power when you name them.”
Gut-Check Journal Prompt:
Where did this belief begin, and who would I be without it?
Protect Your Sparkle Rule:
Treat every setback as information, not identity.
