Episode 19 of The Zero Proof Life Podcast
There comes a moment when you realize you’re tired of talking yourself into “trying harder tomorrow.” The willpower, the shame, the morning promises, the hoping things magically shift. When you’re stuck in an alcohol habit, it’s rarely about weakness. It’s almost always about pain, patterns, and the quiet battles no one sees.
Understanding Why You Feel Stuck
Feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means your brain has learned a loop: anticipation, relief, regret. These loops become automatic, and without awareness, the habit feels bigger than your capacity to change it. When you start noticing what’s underneath the urge: exhaustion, loneliness, stress, overstimulation, then everything becomes clearer.
Try This Line: “What if this isn’t a willpower issue, but a clarity issue?”
The Shame Cycle and Self-Fulfillment Trap
Shame convinces you that you're the problem, not the habit. It whispers that you always mess up, that you can’t be trusted, that you shouldn’t even try. And the more you believe it, the more the cycle continues. Naming shame out loud breaks the illusion. Sharing your story makes you feel less alone. Listening to other women helps you remember: you’re not the only one carrying this.
Reminder: Shame thrives in silence. It dissolves in community.
Triggers, Emotions, and the Power of Preparation
Most women don’t drink because they want alcohol. They drink because something inside them needs soothing. Triggers can be emotional (stress, loneliness), physical (fatigue), or situational (Friday night, social pressure). When you learn your triggers, you regain influence over your choices. Preparation by planning ahead, building supportive routines, and having alternatives ready gives you an advantage your future self will thank you for.
Try This Simple Tool:
When a craving hits, ask yourself: “What do I actually need right now?” Then meet that need.
